With its moving sand dunes and wetlands, the region of Kiskunság provided home only for those who could adapt its unfavourable conditions. During the Ottoman rule, the (mostly depopulated) area used for semi-nomadic cattle-breeding, from where large numbers of Hungarian Grey cattle herded live to the European markets. In the nineteenth century, with the introduction of intensive horticulture, the land of golden sand turned into a valuable agricultural area. Nowadays the people of the region have to face new challenges like aridification and achieving sustainability.

Our one-day long bus trip starts in Kecskemét, the seat of Bács-Kiskun County. The city, originally an agrarian market town, developed into a vibrant cultural centre to the twentieth century while preserving its rich heritage. After the political and economic transition, the development of the city entered a new phase, marked by the greenfield investment of the Mercedes factory.

After a sightseeing tour in the city, the participants can get familiar with the flora and fauna of the Kiskunság National Park in the House of Nature, main visitor's center of the National Park. At the Varga Tanya (scattered farm, or Hungarian “tanya”)a “typical puszta-program” including horse-cart ride, horse show and lunch awaits for the attendants. In the afternoon, we visit an organic farm of the “golden sand area” in Fülöpjakab, and close the tour with a nice evening stroll in Kecskemét.
